I gave up on New Years' resolutions awhile back. I mean really, if something is good and admirable enough to start at the beginning of the year, why wait? I've worked in wellness and fitness long enough to know that resolutions don't work. The push to join gyms and health clubs is huge in January and by March, it's tapered off and even dropped. People, many of them, just give up. The motivation to resolve to change just wasn't strong enough to carry them through. Resolutions, by and large, just don't seem to work. This isn't an empirical statement of course, but I know myself and I've known enough people to see that they're pointless and often lead to guilt.
The reality is though that the New Year does give us "permission" if you will, to change; to start fresh. I read back over my non-resolution for this year. It was the idea of being flexible. No, I'm not talking about taking yoga, I mean being sensitive and open to what God allows in my life and "going with it". A few weeks ago I was reminded of a quote; "instead of asking God to bless what I'm doing, find out what God is doing and get involved". That requires flexibility.
So, my question then is, what is God doing in your life and around you? We don't need to re-invent the wheel. God's plan for those that follow Him is really quite simple; go and make disciples. Now, that can take on many different forms and that's where our creativity, talents and gifts come into play but the goal is simple; introduce the seeking and the hurting to Jesus and grow them so that they do the same in other peoples lives.
So, as I sit here contemplating '09, I would have to say that my non-resolution is to stay focused. "Stay Focused in '09". There are many things that can "de-rail" us from our purpose. If you know me, you know that I juggle about 8 different "roles" so it's easy to let one dominate over another. I know what my calling is and I need to stay focused to that calling first and foremost; all else is secondary. the other things are important but cannot overshadow what my primary calling is; to go after the seeking, the hurting and the next generation and lead them to an encounter with Jesus that ultimately changes their lives and the lives of those around them.
What is your New Year's Non-Resolution?
