This Isn't Summer Camp

Desperate tent city revival for America's homeless

No, this isn't summer camp, this is a tent city in California for those that have been severely affected by the downturn in the economy. California, specifically has been hard hit with over 10% unemployment and high cost of living.
Is this where we are headed? I'm not trying to be Mr. doom and gloom, but this is reality for some across this nation. When I see this I have to ask; don't these people have friends or relatives that can take them in until they can get they're lives back together? What have we become as a society of people that we have to depend on the government to take care of others. It's not the governments responsibility; it is ours as a society to take care of our neighbors. This is the Good Samaritan 2009. Who is your neighbor? Look around. Do you know someone who is down and out? Are you willing to take a friend or loved one in and inconvenience yourself for the good of someone else? What if it were you? Do you have someone you could turn to take you in?

Sad picture-I can't help thinking that the breakdown of the family in America-not just the economy-has as much to do with this situation. We've become such a mobile society, people aren't born in,grow up in, and live in the same place anymore, like the last generation or two. Instead, when the children are grown-they move away, looking for better opportunities, or the parents pack up and move South, to warmer climates. I'd like to think some of these 'tent' people are there temporarily. Just waiting for that bus or plane ticket to arrive from far off family, so they can pack up and get to them. The reality is though-that most of these people were chasing the "American Dream", living beyond their means, with their credit cards maxed out-til it all came tumbling down. When we kicked God out of America-He left! We've got to get back to our roots-just like the people in tent city are probably waiting to get back to their family's! Welcome God back into America. Return to the American Dream our Forefather's had-of blessing God, and letting His precepts be our guide. I'm praying for that.

You know, I am one of those people who does not like to be touched unless I know who you are. It comes from having been raped. So when my hubby told me this the other day, it really warmed my heart. He as at the gas station and a guy who was dressed fairly nice asked if he could borrow enough money to get gas to his house. He noticed he had had his wife and 2 very young kids in the car. He stated he had been on the road all day looking for work and he just didn't have enough to make it home. John filled his car up with gas then he asked when the last time the kids had eaten. He got each child enough for 2 meals, snacks and juice and the mom and dad something as well.

This touched me so deeply. That my husband would do something so nice for a stranger.
